Amazon Basin Academy

The Amazon Basin Academy’s main objective is to promote sustainable development in Latin America, particularly by leveraging the basin’s natural and cultural wealth with global intellectual capital to foster greater economic prosperity, greater social justice, and stewardship of the natural environment. By working toward these objectives, PAX’s Amazon Basin Academy will contribute to the educational community, biodiversity conservation and the promotion of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The Sustainability Development Program, of Pax Research Center of the Americas, in the Amazon Basin focuses on creating a sustainable intelligence unit, a distance learning program, and a biodiversity venture fund. These initial steps are based on sound principles of management and correspond to best practices of planning, organizing, directing, and controlling sustainable projects.  Eventually, the projects will add the element of a blockchain system in the form of a database to allow information sharing within the educational, entrepreneurship, and environmental communities.

Stage 1: Establish the Sustainable Intelligence Unit

The sustainable intelligent unit (SIU) will scan the global markets to identify solutions to the bioeconomy with respect to sustainable products and services that can be duplicated in the Amazon Basin. The SIU will seek to communicate and collaborate with other global organizations and then unite them with local economic initiatives in the Bolivian Amazon to partner and build economies of scale for all concerned.
The goal of the SIU is to leverage existing experience and knowledge to develop products and services while achieving greater social justice, prosperous economies, and stewardship of our environments.

Stage 2: Establish Distance Learning Entrepreneurial Programs

Distant learning programs will be developed for entrepreneurs at various stages of growth who are
interested in sustainable biodiversity products and services. The goal of the distance education program is to facilitate entrepreneurs in learning strategic planning, organization of resources, leadership of a growing company and control to ensure they are meeting the goals set in their strategic plans. The distance learning program will be developed and led by mentors with start-up and growth experience.

Stage 3, Establish a Biodiversity Development Fund

All businesses require funding, professional services, and mentors. Most start-ups are not eligible for traditional banking loans and are too early for venture capital funding. Thus, a venture forum will first be established to allow entrepreneurs to present their ideas to angel investors, microcredit lenders, and professional service providers. For later-stage entrepreneurs, a biodiversity fund will be established from funds raised within Latin America and the international community that are dedicated to preserving the biodiversity of the Amazon Basin and meeting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The jaguar

The symbol of the Amazon Basin Academy

The jaguar, the largest cat in the Americas, is currently threatened by the destruction of its ecosystem and is vulnerable to extinction. The jaguar is our reminder of the delicate balance between humans and our natural environment.
